Plot summary[]

Book plot[]

Daisy Jones writes the song "Regret Me" after Billy Dunne rejects her and he goes back to Camila and his family. Billy doesn't want to perform the song so Daisy puts it to a vote with the rest of the band, and they vote in favor. Billy describes the song as "hard and fast and raw." It was on Side B of Aurora.

TV series plot[]

Daisy and Billy get into a fight at the Aurora album cover shoot the day after he kisses her so she'll sing his song More Fun to Miss. She storms off the photoshoot set and drives in her car when she's inspired to write. She dumps out her purse and pulls out a road map, but hits the car in front of her because she's not paying attention. She ignores the accident and starts writing on the map as the other driver shouts at her through the car window. She heads to Sound City where she sings the song, titled Regret Me, for the rest of the band. Billy comes in late and is upset when she hands him a song she wrote for him this time. He refuses to put it on the album because they're supposed to write all the song together, but she reminds them that he wrote More Fun to Miss without her. He storms out of the studio so Daisy, Karen, Graham, Warren, Eddie, and Teddy spend the day recording the song without him. She and Teddy sit down at the end of the day to hear the track through for the first time, and he merely gives her a golf clap and smile.[1]

Lyrics[]

Lyrics from the book version[]

When you look in the mirror
Take stock of your soul
And when you hear my voice, remember
You ruined me whole

Don’t you dare sleep easy
And leave the sleepless nights to me
Let the world weigh you down

And, baby, when you think of me
I hope it ruins rock ’n’ roll
Regret me
Regretfully

When you look at her
Take stock of what you took from me
And when you see a ghost in the distance
Know I’m hanging over everything

Don’t you dare sleep easy
And leave the sleepless nights to me
Let the world weigh you down

And, baby, when you think of me
I hope it ruins rock ’n’ roll
Regret me
Regretfully
Regret me
Regretfully

Don’t you dare rest easy
And leave the rest of it to me
I want you to feel heavy

Regret me
Regret setting my free
Regret me
I won’t go easily
Regret it
Regret saying no
Regret it
Regret letting me go

One day, you’ll regret it
I’ll make sure of it before I go

Lyrics from the TV series version[]

You regret me and I'll regret you
Except I don't care what you feel
And I totally already do
I'm the slippage in the system
With a natural gift, how I move
So go ahead and regret me
But I'm beating you to it, dude

Oh, you regret me
And I'll regret you

You couldn't handle your liquor
And you can't seem to handle the truth

I'm the slippage in the system
And I'm perfectly ready to strike
So go ahead and regret me
But I'm not easing up on this mic

Seven fallen angels in a tumbler
Meet me in the parlor with your keys
Meet me in the corner where you keep me
I'll do anything you please
I'll do anything you please

You regret me and I'll regret you
I find it perfectly natural
Here in my car to be doing
Off the PCH Highway
With the typical, wonderful view

Go ahead and regret me
But I'm beating you to it, dude

Go ahead and regret me
But I'm beating I always will too regret you

Go ahead and regret me
But I always will too, regret you

Go ahead and regret me
But I always will too, regret you

Quotes[]

On writing the song, from the book:

Daisy: My car was parked along the PCH and I heard this line in my head. Regret me.

All I had in my car to use as paper was the back of my registration and a gas station napkin. And I searched high and low for something to write with. There was nothing in the door compartment. Nothing in the glove box. I got out of the car and I searched under the seats and under the passenger’s seat was a stick of eyeliner.

I started writing. Lightning fast, maybe ten minutes. Beginning to end I had a song.

Trivia[]

  • The song was used in the Prime Video series teaser trailer, and it was the first original song revealed for the TV series.
